Obituary: Dr Katharina Dalton

GP who coined the term 'premenstrual syndrome' in 1953, then set up the first clinic to treat PMS and ran it for 40 years

WHEN she became pregnant and noted that the migraines she suffered every month had abated, the GP Katharina Dalton became fascinated by the possibility of treating the physical and emotional fluctuations associated with the menstrual cycle. In 1953, with Raymond Greene, she wrote the first paper on the condition she called premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and in subsequent years she set up the first clinic in Britain to treat it.

Dalton believed PMS and postnatal syndrome were caused by lack of the hormone progesterone. Her treatments, with diet and large doses of progesterone, were based on her trials and her patients' experiences. They have not been universally sanctioned by the medical establishment. Some doctors feel that PMS is more a psychological condition than a physical one; others prefer to use selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. Yet many of Dalton's patients hailed her as the first "and almost the only" doctor to address a condition that undermines their lives, and maintained that both her analyses and her treatments were invaluable.

... In the subsequent years, she pursued her career as a GP while conducting parallel research into premenstrual syndrome. This involved regular visits to Holloway prison, where she interviewed newly committed prisoners. She found that 49 per cent had been sentenced for crimes committed during the paramenstruum (four days prior to the start of menstruation and first four days of menstruation).

There are somethings in this interview that John Lee,MD would not have agreed with but it is from the woman that pioneered the use of progesterone and coined the term PMS.

The main thing John R Lee MD would have disagreed with is that she seems to be "overdosing" her patients. This can also cause the effects that she was trying to cure. I can't be too hard on her she didn't have saliva tests to confirm hormone balance.

4. Dr John R Lee did not have his patients who were using natural progesterone die of breast cancer.

I discovered none of my patients who had had breast cancer originally and then I gave them progesterone after that none of these people ever died of breast cancer. I didn't have any people die of breast cancer." 1#66:05

7. Prozac interferes with liver function and will likely make depression worse.

# # #

www.willim1.com 05 John R Lee MD - Dec 2002 Talk 2#15:50

Prozac stops the P450 system from working. So someone has oestrogen dominance, they have depression, they have headaches, they are not doing well, they can't tolerate stress, they go to the doctor. They go to the doctor and he puts them on Prozac. That increases their oestrogen dominance, they can't excrete their own oestrogen. So here we have impaired liver function. Yeah, we do have people who drink too much but actually the liver does pretty well with that. But if you have Prozac you're damaged, you can't do that. 2#15:50

an extract from this web page

Women experience depression at roughly twice the rate of men.

One in five women can expect to develop clinical depression during their lifetime. Regardless of age, race, or income clinical depression can occur in any woman, and can be serious enough to lead to suicide.

Depression is second only to high blood pressure as a chronic condition encountered by primary care physicians. It is estimated that 10% of people who visit their physician suffer from major depression, although it in most cases it goes unrecognized or inadequately treated.

Depression is an illness that can afflict anyone, and it is sometimes referred to as the common cold of mental illness.

Although some evidence suggests the depression has increased over recent decades, one 40-year analysis found the overall rate to be holding steady, although the burden of depression may be shifting to women younger than 45.

Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are now the first-line treatment of major depression. They work by increasing levels of serotonin in the brain. SSRIs include fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), fluvoxamine (Luvox), and citalopram (Celexa, Cipramil).

Some of the side effects of SSRIs include dizziness, dry mouth, weight gain, headaches, lack of motivation, sexual dysfunction and worsening of glaucoma. Reducing the dose of the antidepressant before stopping it is recommended.

The Dark Side of Prozac

Millions of Americans, and Australians for that matter, are on Prozac to treat everything from serious depression to shyness, obesity, PMS, and back pain. They’ve been told it has few, or no, side effects.

But what is the dark side of Prozac?

What essential facts must you have if you are already taking Prozac, or are considering taking it?

Dr. Robert Bourgignon who runs Securimed, a small company on Avenue Louise that provides doctors with information about drugs, sent questionnaires to doctors, inviting them to note their patients’ reactions to Prozac. Eighty responded and reported reactions that included suicidal tendencies and violence.

Many doctors admit that Prozac is not as effective as they had at first believed. ...

8. Progesterone is required in the formation of the myelin sheath surround our nerve cells.

I could never understand this until just July of this year. There was an article in "Science" the journal for the American Cabinet for the Advancement of Science. It was an article about how the Schwann cell makes the myelin sheath that covers and protects all the nerves as they pass through your body. There are little cells every couple of centimeters that makes a covering, an insulation called myelin that protects the nerve from damage and it protects the nerve so it doesn't short circuit and lose it's electric impulse when the nerve impulse comes down. Turns out the Schwann cell can't do this unless something interferes with this progesterone receptors. Progesterone is necessary to make the myelin sheath. Now who ever new that before?

The year would be 1995 when John Lee was 66.

" ... the 28th August, another part of the Women's Health Initiative study, they found that C-reactive protein. C-reactive protein is a marker for general inflammation in your body. It is also the most mportant marker for who gets heart attacks. Cholesterol has no significance, zero. You could measure cholesterol on people and you can not predict who is going to have a heart attack. But you measure C-reactive protein and you can predict who is going to have the heart attack. It is an inflammatory disease, it is not a plumbing disease. It is not the blood flow through the coronary arteries per se or clots. It is the fact that inflammation there and that what causes it and CRP and guess what? HRT increases C-reactive protein an independent bio-marker for heart disease. 1#29:07

"It is important, however, to know that British and European markets do not buy US because because they don't want humans to be exposed to these xenohormones. One of them 17 beta-estradiol, is banned by the European Union Scientific Committee on Veterinary Medicine since it is consider a "complete carcinogen ... [that] exerts both tumor initiating and tumor promoting effects." Even at very low levels of exposure, these xenohormones are especially potent in damaging the embyros of animals including humans, leading abnormalities of the ovaries, testes, and other urogenital organs. One of their potential effect is to increase the risk of cancer of the breast, uterus, or prostate later in life. These hormone disruptors are used as "growth hormones" in pork and poultry, also. Since the toxic effect of these xenohormones is most potent during embyro life, it is especially important for pregnant women to choose organically (hormone-free) grown beef, chicken or poultry in their diet."

15. The human brain concentrates progesterone to twenty, 20, times that found in the blood.

In my research over the years, learning about progesterone I discovered brain cells concentrate progesterone and testosterone to levels 20 times higher than the blood carries. Now, brain cells wouldn't do this unless the progesterone or testosterone has some function in the brain cell. Why go to the work of drawing that progesterone in, holding it against an osmotic gradient, getting it through the cell membrane into the brain cell unless there is some reason for it?

So now I understood why some of my patients who gave this to their elder mothers and aunts who were in nursing homes, they gave it to them for their bones or because it's so wonderful for skin, it hydrates skin again, makes skin much better, these elderly women all became much more alert and aware. Women who were content to just to lie in bed all day and couldn't keep track of the conversation with their niece or whatever, after a week or so of being on progesterone they're up leading discussions on the headlines and the latest in book reviews.

I had a doctor come all the way from South Hollow Brazil. He gave it to his 92 year old mother and his mother resumed being an intellectual giant again where before she had become a baby-like cripple, and he specializes in the care of the elderly. He came all the way up from South Hollow Brazil to a little town where I live Sabasco California to spend an afternoon talking to me about it. It helps brain function.

16. The US Government and the FDA passed the regulation approx 1997/1998 telling the makers of Tamoxifen they could not claim that it prevented cancer.

www.willim1.com 05 John R Lee MD - Dec 2002 Talk 1#32:33

"Our Government and the FDA passed the regulation four years ago telling the makers of Tamoxifen they could not claim that it prevented cancer. So they cannot do that, but they can buy doctors and have them claim it. A little escape hole in the law. Isn't that amazing? So doctors go around thinking, "Gee someone over at Cincinnati says we should continue to use Tamoxifen." 1#32:33

Now Tamoxifen is blocked in the breast, but it is oestrogenic in the uterus and it causes cancer of the uterus. Now normally cancer of the uterus is a very benign disease. It shows up as a little bleeding here and there. And you find it, you do a pap smear and you see abnormal cells and you remove the uterus and it has gone, OK. 1#32:56

If you get cancer of the uterus when you are on Tamoxifen it is a different ball game instead of zero deaths there is 87% of you will die. It is a very rapid untreatable malignancy if it is caused by Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen also increases your risk of strokes and blindness and it does no good. There is no test that shows that it works. And yet that is what the doctor gives you because he knows that your own oestrogen is going to cause the breast cancer in the other breast.

# # #

http://uk.geocities.com/willim_walker@btinternet.com/ 05 John R Lee MD - Dec 2002 Talk 2#54:46

Tamoxifen is a cancer causing drug. And almost all countries have abandoned this, it has been out since 1976. It has never been proven to have any beneficial effect on anybody, in preventing breast cancer. There is no study that shows that. They all show no effect and bad effects so most doctors refuse to prescribe it after 2 or 3 years. 100% of doctors refuse to prescribe it after 5 years because after that the side effects begin showing up, strokes, cancers and so on.

“Patients would be shocked to see how little time we spend in medical school on the female endocrine system. I remember about a week in second year, six weeks in the third year. That was for the entire subject of obstetrics and gynecology. Needless to say, 99% of docs enter the "real world" totally unprepared to answer questions, or provide guidance to our patients. That is why I fell in love with this website. I feel I can find any information I need. I can share ideas and problems, and get credible and timely, evidence-based solutions.
